Harrison Volleyball Player Is No Shorty In The Center

You could say, in a sense, that the Harrison Girls’ Volleyball team used their height as an advantage in winning the Class A, Section One Championship this past fall. “We were a small team,” says their Captain Jessica Segal, and as a result, we came together as a very cohesive unit.

Offsetting length on the way to 17-2 season, the sectionals found them bringing home the gold in the relished role of undersized underdog – but just barely. Going the full five sets in the finals, each Harrison win came by a margin of two. “We fought for every

point,” she says.

Otherwise, in the center as team captain, she initially felt a bit over her head when named at the beginning of the year. “It put a lot of pressure on me,” she says, but playing the role of floor general as setter in the 1-5 naturally allowed her to settle in as official team leader.

/> At the same time, she sets the right example by putting her own ego aside amongst those she couldn’t help but look up at. I don’t mind if it sometimes happens that hitters get more credit, she says, I’m just happy to help get them a kill.

But as a junior, she not yet sure of what the future means other than a loose commitment to being a business major in college. Nonetheless, she hopes it includes playing at the college level, so the life lessons volleyball teaches in perseverance and teamwork can continue in life.
