Swimmer Oliver Patrouch Of Fordham Prep Already Making Waves As A Sophomore In Hartsdale

Oliver Patrouch is not only at home in the water but is already making waves as a sophomore on a very successful swimming program at Fordham Prep. "We were undefeated and won the state tournament last year, says the Hartsdale 14 year old.

He's also managed to cool himself and opponents this summer with a good showing in the Counties at Rye Playland. "I got 5th in the High Point," he says, which is an accumulation of scores in the butterfly, the breaststroke, backstroke and relays.

But rising to the top amounts to a time commitment that would

sink most of us. "I train four or five times a week for at least two hours," he says.

Of course, there's more to it than having the stamina to stay afloat and learning the right technicues just adds to
the commitment. Improving turns, strokes and exploding off the blocks, he says, "Sometimes you just have to go extra days or before and after practice."

In part, the motivation flows from all the friends he's made across the pool. "It's a healthy competition," he says.

All told, the end result also factors in and easily expressed in few words. "Winning is definitely cool," he says.

Otherwise, he stays above water with a mind set that cannot lose. "If you compete you're still a winner but if you don't try or participate, you lose," he concludes.
